This period of the year, between Christmas and New Year’s Day. is known in France as the “Trève des confiseurs” (Confectioners’ Truce) in reference to the usual slowdown or lull in political, economic and sporting activities.

Although this period is far from restful for certain businesses, it is often characterised by a saw-tooth pattern in consumption, with a peak just before Christmas, a dip between Christmas and New Year’s and another peak in consumption around the New Year.
