It is essential for RTE’s customers to have access to metering data. This data lets them know the volume of power consumed, thereby helping them to fine-tune their consumption. RTE now gives customers digital access to metering data via its new “continuous monitoring” metering service.

RTE pledges to facilitate and accelerate access to metering data, via a digital service that makes data available to customers in less than 30 minutes. The project assists customers with adopting a simpler, more standardised public data service with unified access that provides flexibility and enhanced core services. By using digital data-exchange technologies, RTE gives its customers new opportunities to work with their usual service providers, or with any IT service provider in the marketplace.

Listening to customers’

RTE’s customers, who were consulted in July 2014, will receive assistance with implementing this new system, including support for the adaptation of their information systems to new modes of access, support for the discontinuation of remote meter reading, means of accessing new data services and deployment guidelines, as well as assistance with replacing remote data metering systems.

How the new metering system works

The metering channel comprises measuring equipment installed at metering points, telecommunication links and a centralised information system. The “continuous monitoring” metering project involves digitising the metering channel to adapt it to the Internet protocol (IP) via a radio or wire link, thus putting an end to remote meter reading via the telephone network.

This digitalisation process involves replacing the telecommunication system for the 8,500 metering points used by customers connected to the transmission system, and it can usually be done without interrupting the customer’s power supply.
